By 2 or 3 o’ clock in the afternoon, I’d be so sleepy it seemed like I was in the twilight zone. Things were going on around me but I wasn’t really “there.” The days would just drag on forever until, finally, it was time to go home.

But when I got home, I wouldn’t feel like mowing the lawn or helping my wife with the dishes, I just wanted to sleep…but I couldn’t because the place would fall apart. I’d just force myself to keep going.

When it was finally time to catch a little TV I’d flop into that big, overstuffed easy chair…lean it back and ZONK!

I’d get the only decent hour or two of sleep I was gonna get all night.

After the 10 o’clock news, my wife, Diana, would shake me and I knew it was going to start all over again.

Climb into bed totally exhausted…finally doze off only to be grabbed by that stabbing sciatic nerve…or jarred awake by my wife tossing and turning. Now I’m in for another long night watching the clock tick by. And during those long nights, I kept asking myself…

How many more nights like this can you stand?

I really felt this was going to be the way I’d spend the rest of my life and that thought was unbearable.

Then one day our neighbor, Jeff Lewis, told me he’d started a memory foam mattress company.

Yep, that’s it, those are the most valuable bits of information you’ll need to know. And, by following these tips, you’ll find you don’t have any anxiety about finding the right mattress (after all, you spend 1/3rd of your life sleeping on your mattress).

In fact, knowing those four things puts you miles ahead of most mattress store salespeople. Most of them are clueless to what you’re about to discover.

1. What Country Does the Foam Come From?

Foreign foams with all their toxic chemicals and smells have sparked many false rumors like sleeping hot and stinking. Quality American made foams have little, if any, detectable smell. If they do, it’s more like a “new car smell” and isn’t toxic. It’ll be gone in a few hours after opening your package.

Foreign foams, on the other hand, can contain any number of harmful, toxic chemicals (CFC’s, Formaldehyde, PDBE’s, etc.) that make the mattress stink, make it too firm and could be very hazardous to your health.

So, even if the mattress is advertised as American made, be sure they don’t use foreign foam to make it. Watch out for this, it’s a deceptive practice that some manufacturers use to make you think they’re using American foam by saying “American Made.”

I don’t know what that stuff is but it’s not NASA foam. It’s something else entirely.

2. Select A Mattress That’s Temperature Sensitive

Temperature sensitivity is one of the most crucial features that makes a foam mattress so unique and so different from any other kind of mattress – and let’s not forget – so darn comfortable.

Coil spring mattresses are not temperature sensitive and don’t do this. They can’t react to your body heat, and this is why someone, who has an injury which is fevered, would feel more comfortable on a memory foam mattress. The mattress would soften under that injured body part.

NOTE: Temperature sensitivity IS NOT to be considered as making you sleep hot because open celled American foam helps circulate air between you and your mattress to keep you cool as you sleep.

3. Select A Mattress With The Correct Density

The next most important thing that you MUST consider, when choosing your mattress is the density of the memory foam. The density can be described as the weight, of a cubic foot of memory foam.

For example, if you were to cut a piece of foam into a 12 x12 x 12 shape of a cube, or giant dice, and weigh it, the resulting weight would be its density.

Most mattress retailers will try to sell you something in a 3 lb density range.

Hey, that’s fine if you want a mattress that FAILS to support your lower back, shoulders and hips and will only last for 1 or 2 years. What you need is densities of at least 4.0-5.0 lb!

And Last but not Least:

4. Select A Mattress With a Thick Enough Top Layer of Memory Foam!

My advice, at least 3 inches! The importance of selecting a mattress with the correct thickness of memory foam on top, cannot be stressed enough.

If this layer is too thin, then you’ll end up sleeping, partly, on the underlying base foam, having a very poor and uncomfortable night’s sleep. That’s exactly the opposite of what you should expect from a TRUE memory foam mattress!

Getting a great night’s sleep is too important, sleeping on anything else is just not an option!

The rest you get at night affects the whole other 2/3rds of your day. So you need to know that you are getting the best bang for your buck.

I mean, think about it for a minute, what would it feel like to lay down on the bare springs?

And why is it, that lying on springs with some kind of material over them, is considered any better?

The creation of the coil spring mattress was first documented, by patent, in 1865, and there have only been a couple of very minor changes, to that original design, in the following 140 years.

The pressure, or force, from the coil springs, in the mattress, is exerted against your body.

It’s kind of like a push and shove match. You’re pushing down on the springs, forcing them to retreat and they’re shoving back against you, trying to uncoil.

Doing it this “old fashioned way” your body has to adjust to the mattress’s shape.
