LAUNDERING GUIDELINES:

Washing :

A. Out of all the questions I’m asked about memory foam, the most frequent memory foam faq is “Does Memory Foam Sleep Hot?”

I would never claim that memory foam doesn’t sleep hot because as sure as I said that, someone would claim that it does. I think that the whole idea of memory foam sleeping hot comes from the older days when people would sleep on a foam mattress in their motorhome or travel trailer.

Those old mattresses were made from a CLOSED CELL foam. To illustrate closed cells, I’ll ask you to imagine thousands of balloons that are in the shape of a mattress. Each cell is full of air, and that air is trapped inside the balloon. The longer you lie on that mattress the hotter the air inside the balloon gets.

Pretty soon, you’re sweating and the longer you lay there, the more you sweat.

Memory Foam is OPEN CELL Foam

Because the cells in memory foam are open, they allow air to escape from one cell to another and, eventually, they are expelled from the mattress. Each time you move, you move old, hot air out of the mattress and draw cool air into it.

I’ve always been a hot sleeper and I didn’t notice any difference when I started sleeping on memory foam. Over the years, I’ve sold mattresses in every area of the U.S. and I’ve never had a mattress returned for sleeping too hot.

Again, I think the rumor about memory foam sleeping hot comes from those old, closed cell mattresses.

Q. Does Memory Foam Stink?

A. The notion, that memory foam stinks, stems from people buying cheap mattresses that are made with foreign poured foam.

Foreign foams can contain all kinds of chemicals that are harmful to you and most of them smell like Limburger cheese. Foreign manufacturers use any chemical they can find that is cheap and there are few, if any, regulations to stop them from doing so.

It’s quite common to find formaldehyde, CFC’s, PBDE’s and other known carcinogens in foreign poured foam.

These chemicals are the cause of the smell and they have given good memory foam a bad name.

Q. What is Memory Foam Density?

A. Memory foam density is a measurement of the weight of a cubic foot of memory foam. If a cubic foot of memory foam weighs 5 lbs., it is 5 lb density memory foam. If it weighs 4 lbs., it is 4 lb density memory foam.

The density of the foam determines how well it will support the human body, especially the lower back.

Foreign manufacturers know that people are looking at the density to determine the quality of the foam so they add clay additives to increase the weight of the foam. This not only gives the foam a false density reading, it destroys the integrity of the foam and gives it a totally different, harder feel than true memory foam.

Q. What is the Best Density for a Memory Foam Mattress?

A. The best density for a memory foam mattress is 5 lb density. 5 lb density will not only support your body much better than lesser densities, it will last a lot longer. 5 lb density memory foam is considered to be 15 to 20 year foam. Even 4 lb foam is only considered to be a 5 to 10 year foam so anything less than 4 lb density is only suitable for pillows, not mattresses or mattress toppers.

Mixing memory foam densities, like TempurPedicTM is now doing, is a recipe for disaster.

If you put 4 lb density memory foam inside a mattress with 5 lb density memory foam, the 4 lb foam will deteriorate much faster than the denser foam. This means that when the 4 lb foam wears out, you will be buying a whole new mattress.

Why No Industry Wide Rating System?

Why isn’t there an industry-wide ratings system to insure quality standards among the different brands?

After all that being said, now that I am better educated and entirely thanks to you, I now know what to look for.

The reason I came up with my question was for everybody else out there who doesn’t know who Chuck is, they should not be taken advantage of.

If you go into any store, and ask about a memory foam mattress, they all say that theirs is the best. The last mattress we had was one of those “it’s the best”.

After having it for about a year, it is by far the worst POS, NO comparison to yours.

In fact, before we decided to buy yours we went to Rooms to Go and looked at their mattresses and of course they were the best.

However, now with ammunition, and after letting the sales guy dig himself a hole, I asked “Is it temp. sensitive, USA foam, weight” ETC, boy oh boy the back pedalling was fun to hear.

So, having some sort of quality standard would be nice with so many people BS-ing you just to make the sale.

New Bailiff Nearly Gets Raw Deal

A temporary Bailiff was visiting my court last week.  On a break, I overhear him talking to everyone about his desire to buy a new memory foam mattress down the road a piece.  He says he can’t afford a TempurPedic but he is going to start looking around at others.  So I spring into action.

I tell him I have a book he needs to read which discussed the 5 pitfalls to avoid in shopping for a memory foam mattress.  He is delighted.

A few days later he comes back in and announces that he had gone shopping at “Matttress Jacks” (name changed) in a Goleta…a garage store that caters to U.C.S.B. College Students on a limited budget.  He looks at “Jacks” best memory foam for about $1,000.00.

So he asks the golden questions.

“Is this American foam?”  Answer: “oh, no…because of the expense, almost no memory foam comes from the U.S….it comes from Asian countries.”

Question: “is this 5 lb or greater density?”  Answer: “No, but it IS over 3 lb. density and that’s all you really need.”

Question: “Is this foam temperature sensitive?”  Answer:  “Well, I’ll be honest with you here.  The only complaints that I get with this mattress is that it sleeps hot…”

When asked if there was any type of return policy, the response was…”Well, not at this price!”

Mr. Bailiff told “Mattress Jack” that he would have to get back to him….then he asked for your website to contact you when he and his wife were ready.   Go figure.

This Thing is the BOMB

I used to joke that “sleeping is what I do best.”

However the last couple of years, I just was not sleeping well.

When I went to bed, I couldn’t seem to get comfortable.

When I did sleep, it was not restful sleep.

I tossed and turned and flipped and flopped throughout the night.

Each morning when I got out of bed, I felt like I had been the loser in a wrestling match.

Odd, when I think back now, that I somehow adapted to this ritualistic pattern of restless sleep and aching back, shoulders and hips.

Sure, I was mighty unhappy with the loss of sleep and aching body parts.

But assuming that my age (that would be fall hen age) was the culprit, I believed there was no solution to the problem.

My two senior bulldgos hobbled around as badly as I did in the mornings, and I worried they were not resting comfortably at night either.

After doing some research, I purchased a couple of memory foam beds for them.

The beds made an amazing difference — my dogs were sleeping better, and were not limping in the mornings as they did before sleeping in their new beds.

I had never really seriously considered that my mattress might be contributing to my restless sleep.

Afterall, I had a popular namebrand matteress that was only a few years old.

Nevertheless, I couldn’t ignore the differnce in my dogs.

So, I began doing my research.

How fortunate that I ran across Chuck Harmon.

He is a wealth of information, and I appreciate the professional guidance he provided to me.

I got just what I needed from Chuck — I am telling you — this thing is the BOMB!

It feels great to crawl into bed now.
